Is Lean Six Sigma a Scam?

What is Lean Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is about improving quality and eliminating defects. The consolidation of Lean and Six Sigma has helped quality improvement in the organizations that have adopted the Lean Six Sigma methodology. Lean is about improving efficiency by removing waste; whereas, Six Sigma is about reducing defects or eliminating variations in the production process. When we combine Lean with Six Sigma, they help in productivity and customer satisfaction.

Six Sixma follows the framework DMAIC – Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. This framework helps in understanding the root cause of problems. It also helps in implementing a solution that will solve the problem permanently. Lean Six Sigma is quite a powerful tool if you’re aware of how to use it. Some companies think Lean Six Sigma may not work for them, or the application of Lean Six Sigma could be a waste of time. This is because they don’t have complete knowledge of the Lean Six Sigma principles and tools. Some of the misconceptions of Lean Six Sigma are:

Expensive to implement
Lean Six Sigma is for manufacturers and not for other functions or industries
Waste of time
Too much of data analysis and statistics involved
It is for big organizations and not for small companies

Is Lean Six Sigma a Scam?

Over the years, a new notion has surfaced that questions the credibility of Lean Six Sigma. Lean Six Sigma has remained relatively unchanged over the years. Also, there is no governing body behind Lean Six Sigma that could continuously monitor the quality management spectrum and incorporate the development into altered learning. Because of these factors, the question that arises is, “Has Lean Six Sigma become obsolete or is Lean Six Sigma a Scam?”

The answer to the second question is ‘No,’ it cannot be a scam! If you look at its history, it has helped companies who adopted it to grow successfully. It is a tool that will help in improving quality, customer satisfaction, and overall productivity. However, complete knowledge of Lean Six Sigma is a must to implement in any organization. Professionals with incomplete expertise or with no faith in the concept may fail and will end up blaming Six Sigma for their failure.  It will also be not correct to say that LSS has become obsolete. Organizations are still deriving utility. However, organizations have indeed been fine-tuning LSS to suit their business structure better.

There are no pre-requisites to get a Lean Six Sigma certification, which means that it is open for anyone. Organizations that are willing to implement Lean Six Sigma should start with training their employees for yellow and green belt certification and also get their management team trained for Black Belt certification.

Companies like Starbucks, Wal-Mart, AT&T, Bank of America, The Coca-Cola Company, and many more such big organizations have grown and become one of the most significant brands globally. Their weapon has been implementing Lean Six Sigma. These companies are service industries. Therefore, it’s just a myth that Six Sigma will only work in manufacturing companies. It will work in the service industry or any other industry. It’s about gaining the complete knowledge of Lean Six Sigma and implementing it in the right way in your organization.

It is an essential certification in the Quality Management field. Another major score for Lean Six Sigma is that it delivers utility even for project leaders and can easily be combined with Project Management principles. If you want to help your organization grow and make quality improvements in the process, then gaining expertise in Lean Six Sigma through certifications is a way to move ahead.
